There's fewer things in life that will have the forever memories of riding motorcycle with Kellie and Mark. Kellie is strong, capable and can handle just about every situation.
Mark is truly a go to guy. Therfore I allowed him the free reign of choosing where and how to get where we wanted to go. Successfully Mark exceeded my expectations without my input....(thank god I didn't have to be in charge of where and when to get to wherever we were supposed to be). It's hard to belive that as of today we've traveled 4,380 miles whithout getting lost, except those moments that we thought we new were we were going........
It may be difficult for some to understand the joy of motorcycling but for us the ability to negotiate weather, temperature, etc, only adds to the reason the moves us to this sport. I am so proud of Kellie. She's a true sport. No whinging, moaning or groaning. Get it done. And I must add Kellie's skill's in handling multilple challenges, such as extreme tempeature, losing contact w/ me, or visa versa. (I would stop to take pictures, but with communications, that had little idea of where I was....) I would eventually make contact via our radio communications and all was fine. (next year we'll have to get Mark his own Radio)
Some may think that this group could possibly have a test of patience but not to be true. The cohesive and positive attitude always prevailed.
At one of our stops Kellie wanted to adopt a really cute puppy but the owner showed up and that put a stop to that. I really don't think I had any room in my back tour pack for the dog. (was a cute pup)
We're closing in the final miles of this trip. We've taken many pictures that we'd like to share hoping we can put together an evening of this adventure. To date we're safe and sound. The venture is not yet done but I do not expect anything but normal activities.

Almost home
Well, we're nearing the end of our three hour tour. At this point in the game, I wish we were already home. I feel like we've seen the interesting parts of our journey, and now it's Ohio, Pennsylvania and NY, which is stuff we've all seen many times before. And all that's left is the driving, or in our case, the riding. The Badlands were absolutely amazing. And unbelievably hot. The people we've met have been funny and interesting, for sure. We stopped at a Harley dealership Iowa yesterday and they had the cutest golden retriever named Jodee. I was covered in fur after hugging her and finally felt dressed for the first time since I left my dogs at home.
I really miss Danielle and it feels like forever since I've seen her. She has had one busy and exciting vacation, though. Six Flags, camping, horse barn, sleepovers, High School Musical party, more sleepovers, friends. I think she's been busier staying at home than we have been on our trip. I also miss our dogs, Freak and Atticus. I bet they're fine with Michelle our neighbor. She spoils them. I heard the oil company ran into our stone wall this week. Can't wait to see that. ha ha.
Well, folks, thanks for coming along with us. We'll be in touch.
Danielle,
I love you a whole lot. I hope you had fun at Maddie's house and I hope the movie was excellent. I'll call you later. Miss you much. xoxoxoxoxox

Bovine Intervention

We've spent a lot of 'quiet' time on the road and you think about things like this....and everything else.
This is Badlands National Park and it was desert hot!! Breathtaking views - very awesome.
Next was Iowa which was filled with cows and corn. Now I (and Danielle) love cows - I love steak, burgers and wear my fair share of leather. Corn is my favorite vegetable by far - niblets, creamed corn, corn on the cob, corn salad, etc. So this would make Iowa my culinary mecca, but I am all set with seeing either of these for a while now.
Badlands Cactus.
I was practicing my rodeo moves. I stayed on that bull for at least 3 minutes - I think it was a record!
Elvis Death Candy.
Great end to a great day. Watering hole by some nice folks where we feasted on Ruben Balls, Sweet Corn Nuggets and Jalepeno Poppers! It tasted great for health food.
In Defiance, OH now and getting ready to leave. Hope to capture Ohio, a little Pennsylvania and get into Upstate NY today.

Winner, SD
Well, we took our time yesterday, and travelled approximately 300 miles. We stopped for the night in Winner, South Dakota. A very small town by our standards, but a very big town compared to the towns we drove through. For example, in Witten, SD they have a sign that says "business district", but there was only two buildings. hmm. We took Route 44 all day, and were able to see the Badlands. How amazing!!! We've got some amazing pictures that we'll post later this evening when we stop for the night. It was in the upper 90s yesterday, but even hotter in the never-ending desert. We saw prairie dogs and they make the cutest noises. Today it's supposed to be in the 80s, which will be a tremendous relief. Well, we'll post some more later, along with pictures. Have a great day.
D,
Love you lots. Will call you in a little while. Mommy

Leaving. Awwww
Spearfish Canyon was amazing. What a ride. Dad loved it so much he wanted to go back through it again, so we did after checking out Deadwood again and Boot Hill. I love Calamity Jane. Her nickname really describes her. Not that she was an upstanding citizen, because she certainly was not. But in spite of her vices and alcoholism, and among her sporadic forays into illegal ways of making a living she was a very caring and generous person, who always gave what she had and spent lots of time taking care of others. She did like to make up stories, though. One of her famous fibs was that she was once Buffalo Bill's sweetheart. Probably not true. Interestingly enough, though, was that her dying wish was to be buried next to him. And she was. She is buried right next to him on Boot Hill in St. Moriah's Cemetery. Huge climb to Seth Bullock's grave all the way at the top of Boot Hill. He is facing Roosevelt Mountain, as was his wish, as TR was a friend of his. He is buried with his wife Martha. People leave strange things on the graves. On Buffalo Bill's grave there are business cards and cigarettes and liquor bottles. On Jane's grave there are liquor bottles, cigarettes and even a girl scout pin. I sure wish people would stop being so disrespectful. On Bullock's grave there are lots of pine cones and rocks. Don't get that one.
Well, it's time to go. We'll be taking a different route back then the one we took out here. And we're giving ourselves a little extra time so we can really see and appreciate some interesting things on the way back. My right leg is still numb, but hasn't gotten any worse. Let's hope it stays that way.
Mark's right. This place does have a sad look to it now that it's deserted. Not quite the excitement or bustle that it had when we arrived. We'll blog from the road. I'm certain we'll meet some more interesting people and see some more interesting things. So far, it's been great. I wouldn't have missed it. Thanks to all of you for coming along with us on our journey, but keep checking, because it's not over yet.
Danielle, you're going to have such a good time at Six Flags. I can't wait to hear all about it. You've been so good at checking the blog and leaving us messages, it's so fun to hear from you. Miss you so much, can't wait to see you. Love, Mommy
Mom and Scott, thanks for taking the kid to fun places. You're brave to go to Six Flags. Scott, sure wish I was there to go on the big kid rides with you. You know Mom won't. ha ha. Love you both very much. Miss you. Kellie

So Long Suckas!

That's our bikes and our cabin in the background. Sweet!
Sunsets were beautiful and Kellie and I saw multiple shooting stars with our new friend Wolfgang.
The other day I ran into a bee with my forehead at 60 mph - he apparently didn't appreciate that and stung me. It hurt like hell! By the time we got home I had this big bump swelling on my head. When I woke up at 4 AM to put the rain top on our tent with Kellie (because we were awoken by raindrops) I went to the restroom and scared myself in the mirror. My nose and eyes were also really swollen and it felt weird to blink. No pain though - I just looked weird. Not quite elephantitis - I am not an animal!
That is the third bee sting in two months and all have been while riding.
With everyone gone Sturgis has that hungover feel to it. That sudden let-down of hundreds of thousands of people invading this tiny town, partying like rock stars and leaving abruptly.
It's kind of like when the carnival leaves town and all that's left behind is the matted grass and trash. But we got great deals on tee shirts!!
Danielle, have a great time tonight at six flags. Tell Kaylee me and mommy say hello and remember to say 'thanks a lot' to Grammy and Poppa.
To Grammy and Poppa, Kellie and I really appreciate everything you have done to help make this trip possible. We love you a lot and look forward to sharing all the pictures with you!
My turn to shower and load the bike - will blog next from the road.
Peace and Much Love,
Mark

Buffalo Bob and his friend Charley

As were getting ready to mount back up onto our iron steeds I was concerned that the noise would startle and possibly annoy them. But not only were they comfortable with the noise but as we were trying to leave Bob here in the picture decided to take his sweet and slippery time crossing the road right in front of us! Then his friend Charley had to come along too!
It was truly awesome!
Teddy Roosevelt was included because he was responsible for the Panama Canal, a ton of wildlife preservation and National Parks. He won the Nobel Peace Prize and grew up in South Dakota. Knowing the sculptor didn't hurt either!
I must admit if you asked me where Mt Rushmore was a month ago I would be hard pressed to answer correctly. But I hope to always remember now. The lisence plates here say "Nice Faces. Nice Places."

Main St Sturgis with bikes as far as the eye can see. Lots of great sounds, great people and fun times! We met some amazing folks from Germany, Australia, and all over the USA.
Going riding now through Spearfish Canyon. My maintenance issues are resolved - no thanks to Harley-Davidson that thought it was ok to not open on the last day of the rally to leave folks like me stranded. Fortunately the folks at J+P had what we needed and I got the repairs done last night. Hate to bash the makers of the best motorcyles on this planet but their merchandise has become ridiculously priced while being outsourced more and more. Kellie was looking at a cute tank top with about 20 cents worth of printing on it, made in Honduras and they wanted $34. Really?
I guess we'll just buy their bikes and let other folks buy the clothes. Sad though.
Going riding in 101 degree heat. Much Love and post again soon!

This first picture (again, I did them out of order. Great) is Mark pulling the handle of the biggest slot machine I've ever seen in Deadwood. Not being a big fan of flushing our money down the toilet, we didn't stay very long in the casinos.
This second picture is of some random bikers entering Mount Rushmore. See, even us bikers like to look at cool sites and historical landmarks.
This third picture is a herd of buffalo in the Custer State Park which is located in the Black Hills National Forest. I have never seen such a sight in my life. They are so big. We heard (get it, herd?) that a buffalo charged a guy on his motorcycle the day before. What? What in the world do you do when a buffalo charges you? What was he doing getting so close to a buffalo. I would have loved to play wildlife photographer and crawled around looking at them with my camera, but Mark wouldn't let me, so this is what we got.

Here's the Crazy Horse Monument. It's not even close to done yet, but the original sculptor and his family have been working on it for years and years. He died years ago, but his wife and seven of his ten children are continuing his work. Eventually you'll be able to see Crazy Horse's hair and the horse he's riding on. Kinda strange that they'd decimate an entire mountain with continuous blasts of dynamite, disturbing all of the wildlife, to create a monument. Whatever happened to good ole marble, like Rodin used?

This one is my dad and me at Mount Rushmore. What an awesome day for a ride. The roads were amazing. So was this. Would you believe that Thomas Jefferson, immediately to Washington's left, was started on Washington's right. They got much of his face finished before Borglum (the artist) ran into a major fissure in the rock, and so in 1934 they blasted his face right off the mountain and moved it over to Washington's left, where it is now.
Thanks for checking us out. Mark will probably add some comedy later. I just finished my statistics and my theoretical criminology homework and seem to have put my sense of humor somewhere else for the time being.

Oh, by the way, the campground is about empty now since the rally ended today (or yesterday?) and my dad and Mark and I were able to get cabins. YAY!!! don't like tents in high winds.
Sunday
Hi everyone!! (Especially you, Danielle)
Today is Sunday. We'll post some pics later, but I wanted to write a quick note to let you know what's up. Yesterday we did some great riding, we saw Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Monument. We also rode through Custer State Park and the Black Hills National Forest. Amazing views. We saw an entire herd of buffalo!! I've never seen anything like it. We've got good pics of that, too. On the way back to camp, we went to Deadwood for dinner. It was really interesting, but slightly disappointing since every historical place was actually a casino. Also, there was either fine dining or "get your own" burgers and fries. No casual dining. Darn, I had to eat fried foods. Also, everyone smokes in restaurants here. Yuck.
Today, we have a few bike issues. Mark needs to replace his ignition switch, and it seems like I might have a small electrical issue. We're getting a late start (which I'm sure is driving my dad nuts since he's always moving) but this morning was freezing cold, raining, with 30 mph winds. Now it's sunny and warmer, but still a little windy. The whole place has cleared out since the rally really ended yesterday. What that means to us is that we'll be able to see the sights and do some riding without all the traffic.
Pics later, and peace to you all.
Danielle,
Grammy told me about your bad dream. Sorry I wasn't there, but don't you worry. It will never happen, I promise. You're my one and only. I love you whole bunches. I called you a little while ago, and I'll call you again later. Miss you much. Wait til you see these pictures of the buffalo. We had to be careful, though. There was a big sign that said "Be careful. Buffalo are dangerous." Needless to say, I did not approach any buffalo to pet them. The babies were cute, but the big ones were not. I'm very excited about your trip to Six Flags. Are you going Monday or Tuesday? Your message about the ice cream social made me really want some cookie dough ice cream. Maybe I can find some in town. This place is very dry and the weather changes more than it does at home. Hope to talk to you in a little while and I can't wait to see you again. I like it on vacation, but it will be nice to be home with you. We'll go to the lake a lot, and maybe the beach again, too.
I love you,
Mommy

Hee Hee

I have to go load up before I get yelled at but I wanted to say hello to everyone and big kisses to Dorkus! Love you D. We'll be in Sturgis today if it is supposed to be and we'll have a great time getting there. Auntie Claire, my butt is doing just fine in case you were wondering.....

Our niece Emily requested a picture of a peach in Sturgis - I am hoping to get partial credit for a picture of a plum in Iowa. If nothing else it is amusing to know you can get Ultra Smooth Vanilla Blend chewing tobacco in Iowa. Since Kellie and Don ride behind me I left that chewing tobacco right where it was.
Starting Day 5 Thursday
Hi everyone,
It's 5:30 am in Sioux City, Iowa and we're hoping to be on the road in about an hour. The rain just didn't stop yesterday and there was thunder all day. I did manage to write a term paper here in the hotel, so that's a positive. Yes, Auntie Claire, my butt hurts. And my right leg is asleep since yesterday. Gonna have to get some sort of gel pad or something when we get there. We should get to Sturgis today. Hopefully we'll have about three days left of the rally and then the whole place to ourselves for a day or two before we head back. Will blog later!! Great day to all!
Danielle,
Love you so much. I'll call you before we get on the road. Hope your Light Bright design came out nicely. xoxoxoxoxoxo Mommy

8/8/07 What a great day for a long ride !
Of those who speak about what's to do, there's fewer things in life that challange every sense of being, anticipation, expectation, can't wait to start, when can we stop, will this road ever end, what's over this hill, why is so hot, how did it get so cold.?
The trick is planning your bladder.
Seriously, the thrill of this trip goes beyond belief. You never get weary of the sights, the big sky, the tremendous vistas as the sun goes down seem to have a never end. It's not easy going 70 mph and all the while the the colors, cloud patterns w/ never ending swirls of whispy tails colored with every imaginable hue.
The Wind
Got to see the Modern Windmills, dozens of them. They are hundred of feet tall w/ blades that span 300 feet across.
Hope all are doing well, let's stay in touch. Love Don

Day 3 and Day 4

Sorry we weren't able to post any blogs yesterday. We stayed in a weird place in Webster City, Iowa last night (Tuesday night), where I think they still use soup cans and string to talk to one another, so Internet was not available. I posted these pics out of order, so here goes. At the top you see my dad and me at sunset in Webster City, IA outside of the most luxurious Super 8 you've ever seen. (eww). Right below that are the three of us getting ready to leave said luxury hotel this morning. Under that is a tractor that pulled up to a gas pump at a travel plaza. I've never seen that before. Then, the last pic is us at the start of our day. Told you they were backwards. It was starting to rain, so we got our rain suits on before we left. It ended up being impossibly HOT and very, very sunny. I think the temperature got past 100. We made it all the way through Indiana, Illionois and into Iowa before we stopped for the day. By the way, if any of you ever hear me mention just how big one of our local corn fields is, just please punch me in the face. I have never seen so much corn in my life. Also, by the way (Danielle, you'll think this is hilarious), Iowa smells like cow poop. Everywhere. And the bugs are gigantic. Yuck. We had to stop early because of the rain, so we checked into our hotel in Sioux City, Iowa for the night. Of course, now that we're here in the hotel, it looks like it's clearing up. Of course. We were hoping to get to Sturgis today, but not gonna happen. Weather gurus say good sailing for tomorrow, so we'll leave early and get there early. For all of you that know how much I hate riding on the highway, you'll be happy to know that I did three whole days on the interstate. We didn't start on any state roads until today. We've seen a lot of nothing and a few interesting things. We did see a hog truck at the gas station today. Weird. The driver got out and said, "trade you a hog for a hog" or something like that. Clever hog transporter guy. Webster City was a really strange place with strange people and a fairly large Mexican population. We actually ate at a Mexican restaurant that served authentic Mexican food. It was pretty good, but the Margaritas were fantastic. Thanks for all of your messages, we hope you're doing well.
Danielle,
I hope you've got this blog all figured out. We miss you SOOOOO much and we'll have so much to tell you about when we get home. Write us soon!! If you were here, you'd be just as sick of corn as I am. Maybe you'd even be ready to try a new vegetable. Ha Ha. I send you 78 hugs and 325 kisses. That ought to keep you busy for awhile. I'll call you in a little while. I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

End of Day 2

Hi All,
Boy, it's inspiring to see all of your messages. Ken, Dad's already in for the night, so I'll make sure he checks your post tomorrow. Auntie Claire, I'm so psyched you're following along. Thanks for the well wishes. Amy, I wish you came along, you'd certainly be good comic relief. Well, I'll see you in October, since I'm your date for the reunion, right? ha ha . Just kidding, Mark. Today was long, but good. We're in South Bend Indiana, right below the Michigan border. I was all excited to see signs for Sturgis, but that was Michigan, NOT South Dakota. No rain today, but close. We did 430 miles (approx) today, starting out from Clarion, PA. Tomorrow, LOTS of rain, it looks like. Good thing we have rain suits, I'll be darned if we spend the day in this place. We rode all day, was SOOOO hot, like high 90s early 100s. We spent most of the day in Ohio. Seen one farm, you've seen them all, I guess. We ordered pizza for dinner since it started raining the minute we pulled into the parking lot of the Ritz Carlton, uh I mean Holiday Inn Express. hee hee. The best part of ordering pizza was that I told the guy I wanted the 2x Tuesday deal, and he told me that it was Monday. DUH. ha ha. (Mark's fault).
Danielle,
We miss you BIIIIIIIGGGG! Thanks for getting the dogs some tennis balls, especially since Freak ate them all. Did you get the chance to see them today? I called you tonight. Did you get my message? I'll try again in the morning. We love you a whole bunch. I really hope to talk to you in the morning. Mark wanted to tell you that Grandpa eats more ice cream than any kid he's ever seen. I can't believe it either. He wants to stop for ice cream every other stop. Love, Mommy and Mark.
Mom and Scott,
Love you both, thanks for everything, as always.
Second Day of Don DeCapillingalong
Our First Day started out w/ the prescribed arrival time at the Dilling's house for a 7:30 am departure. I arrived on time. I think the Dilling's had longer night than I. I think we were on the road about 10:30 am.
Motorcycling is a sport. This sport comes in many faces. First day of departure always holds alot of anticiaption. Packing requires the skill of watch maker to make sure that all you may need on such a trip is engineered to fit. Whatever your missing, you do without. The thrill of motorcycling is a personal experience. Some like the Sunday cruise day, (I've done that before) where you can go about a leisure day of watching the world go by. But, finding a road that that begs to be ridden at speed that is within my limit along with alot of tight turns, alot of straight, flat roads... otherwise, any opportunity that lets you safely open up the throttle.

Day 1 Pics

About to embark on our three hour tour.....A three hour tour

After my eulogy this weekend God wasn't accepting my copilot position so I had to use duct tape instead.

Having a blast! Couldn't imagine better people to ride with. Of course I wish JJ and Liz were able to accept our January invitation and I also wish my brother Ken and his wife Sherri were here with us. Ken rides like a champ too. Very proud of my wife as she was point chick like a champ!
Miss you Danielle and hello to all of you checking us out!
Peace, Mark

Day One
Hi everyone!!! (Hi Danielle!!)
End of Day One. We experienced all sorts of weather from beautiful, to cloudy, to windy, and finally, to pouring rain. No worse for the wear, we are spending the night in Clarion, PA, about 75 miles from the Ohio border. We'll get an early start tomorrow and I will post our pics from today and tomorrow at the end of the day. Today we spent all our time on the interstate, I found out that I get about 120 miles per tank of fuel, so we stop about every two hours. Mark and I love our new rainsuits (thanks Bert), and we were lucky to have them. Except when the bootie of my rainsuit got caught on my footpeg and my bike and I fell over at the gas station. Little embarrassing, but only bent my clutch lever. Phew.
Had to stop so Mark could fix my bike before we even got out of CT because my new foot peg on the right needed tightening. By the way....Mark and my Dad are the best people to ride with. I ride in front, and sometimes it's Dad, then Mark, or the other way around. I have no idea why they pick the directions-challenged person to lead, but hopefully I won't get us too lost.
Danielle, I hope you had fun at the flea market with Grammy. I love you WAY BIG!! You're the best ever. I'll call you tomorrow. I fixed your signing-on problem. I verified the email address with Google, so you should have no problem signing on to the blog from now on. We expect lots of messages, so check the blog often. Kiss the dogs for me and tell them I miss them. I miss you the absolute most. :)
